The Arkansas Razorbacks have locked up former Miami Hurricanes head coach Randy Shannon with a $400,000 per year contract to be the Associate Head Coach under Bret Bielema, a promotion from his role as the Hogs linebacker coach last year… Shannon will still maintain his post as the coach of the linebackers, a job he earned $315,000 for last year… At 400K, Shannon is the highest paid assistant on Bielema’s staff but he would be sixth highest paid on Les Miles staff.

Arkansas tight end commitment for the class of 2015, 6’6” 250 pounder, JeMario Bell of Junction City is also a beast on the basketball court… in a game against Norphlet Friday night, Bell shattered thebackboard on a jam, causing the game to be called with his Dragons leading 55-25…he had 26 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals at the time for Junction City, undefeated through the first 20 games this season… another area standout whom the Hogs are high on is getting attention from all corners of the collegiate globe… Hope Bobcats sophomore defensive end McTelvin Agim already has an Arkansas offer in his corner along with Baylor… on Friday, Clemson became the latest to believe in the kid from Hope…

South Carolina’s Sindarius Thornwell earned his second SEC Freshman of the Week honor when he was tabbed Monday after back to back stellar performances last week… the Gamecocks knocked off Vanderbilt and Alabama with Thornwell averaging 20.5 points, five boards and dishes in the wins… He now has 6-20 point efforts this year, one more than South Carolina’s all-time leading scorer BJ McKie had during his freshman sting in 1995-96…

Billy Donovan’s Florida Gators seventeenth straight win Sunday was impressive to the voters in the AP poll… the ten point win in Rupp Arena against Kentucky moved the Gators up to number two in the country behind unbeaten Syracuse… the Gators one first place vote is all that stands between the Cuse being a unanimous number one..

The Tennessee Volunteers and incoming 2014 recruit Jalen Hurd received an apology from Southern Cal Monday… on national signing day, Southern Cal had cameras in their “war room”… when Hurds name was mentioned on an ESPN broadcast, a member of the USC coaching staff muttered, “Jalen Hurd is so soft and terrible, I don’t know why,” and then his voice trailed off.  The coach in question is reportedly former Tennessee national championship winning quarterback Tee Martin who serves as Wide Receiver coach for the Trojans… Hurd, the number five running back prospect in the country according to Rivals.com, was the subject of a statement from Martin who wrote, “I’ve never had any dealings with Jalen Hurd and wish him the best at the University of Tennessee.” From USC’s twitter account: “USC athletics apologizes for any inappropriate comment overheard on a video created on national signing day.” The video had been up since signing day on USC’s Instagram account---but came to light Monday when others started sharing it…

Former Northwestern State baseball coach, John Cohen earned his 500th career coaching victory Sunday when his Mississippi State Bulldogs disposed of Western Carolina 7-2… the win was the 179th at Mississippi State for Cohen, who won 175 games at Kentucky and 146 at NSU, where coached for three years: 1998-2000, succeeding Dave Van Horn…

Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze had a weekend he would like to forget… two of his key players were arrested Saturday night/early Sunday morning… Denzel Nkemdeche was popped for disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct and failure to comply with a police officer… Nkemdeche was arrested at an apartment complex in Oxford that is mainly filled up with students according to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger… rough way for Nkemdeche to finish off his 21st birthday, which was Saturday…  the 2012 All-SEC defensive end whose 2013 output tailed off due mainly to injuries, tweeted on Monday: “Hopefully I won't be judged by the exaggerated claims of how I acted on my 21st birthday. I still know what's important in life…God got me”… also, Serdarius Bryant, the teams’ leading tackler last season, was arrested for public drunk and disturbing the peace… FREEZE issued a statement indicating both players have been suspended until more is known about the arrests and what caused them…

LSU Baseball coach, Paul Mainieri had high praise for freshman second baseman, Kameron Robertson---the son of Baylor Lady Bears head coach and lady techster legend, Kim Mulkey… Mainieri said Robertson “put on a clinic out there at second base. That catch he made, sliding on the warning track by the wall, that’s as fine a catch as you’ll ever see a second baseman—on any level—make.” Mainieri added, “He was electric out there. He’s a much better game player than he is a practice player.”

ESPN.Com ranked the top-five SEC football student sections…and not surprisingly, they award LSU the top prize… the website’s choice was based on volume and quality, it appears, writing: “thousands of unruly purple-and-gold-clad students raining chants, profanities and boos down on you in a stadium that traps sound right over the top of teams.”  The closing argument for LSU’s spot atop the chart? This quote: “LSU's students have gotten so out of hand in the past that they've had chants taken away because of improvised, profane additions to songs (returned in 2013) and are no stranger to public reprimand. “

Proving it’s never too early… Les Miles received a commitment for the 2016 recruiting class over the weekend when Donaldsonville wide receiver, Stephen Sullivan said he would be an LSU Tiger… this news comes from his high school coach and the baton rouge morning advocate… Sullivan is 6’6”, 200 pounds…

LSU men’s golf coach Chuck Winstead wasn’t too happy with his crew’s abbreviated Fall Schedule… he hopes the 33rd ranked Tigers shape up in their Winter/Spring debut at The Prestige tournament this weekend at PGA West in LaQuinta, California. The tournament features eight top-50 teams… Winstead tinkered with his ten-member team during the fall, looking for the right crew to send out in February… and former Loyola Flyer, freshman Eric Ricard is one of the five that will tee up the dimpled orb this week on the west coast… Winstead, in the Morning Advocate said, “Eric Ricard got in the lineup at Isleworth (in October) and led our team through two rounds as a freshman.”  Current Calvary Baptist Academy teammates, Sam Burns and Nathan Jeansonne are slated to join Ricard at LSU…Burns finished 9th and Jeanonne 34th at an American Junior Golf Association event in Houston that completed yesterday (Monday).
