McDowell Resigns As Southwood Girls Basketball Coach; School To Rename Gym In His Honor

After 20+years and 11 state titles as head coach of the Southwood Lady Cowboys, Steve McDowell resigned his post today in order to spend more time with his family according to Southwood principal Jeff Roberts.

So how does a school pay tribute to a coach who delivered more hardware than an Ace 18-wheeler? "I actually went behind Steve's back last year and got approval from the School Board to rename our gymnasium, 'Steve McDowell Gymnasium'", Robets said. "Of course, Steve would have none of it while he was still coaching, so I told him, 'When you leave---which I hope is ten or fifteen years down the road, we're renaming the gym and painting your name on the court."

Unfortunately for fans of highly precise offensive sets, tenacious defense and a calm, cool, calculated attack on the opponent---that renaming will take place this season.  Robets said, "It will come later in the season, but we will have a formal ceremony where we unveil his name on the floor and officially rename the gym in his honor."

Jacoby Marshal, currently an assistant under Norm Picou for the Southwood Boys Basketball team, will serve as interim girls head coach. Girls assistant, Terry Josting will continue in the same role.
